Born and raised in Hawaii, Makani grew up living the Hawaiian way. Snorkeling, fishing, surfing, hiking, hunting, and camping were common occasions among his large Hawaiian family. After studying at Kamehameha Secondary School, Makani attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He entered the military as a Marine Officer, where he served his country for 5 years. During his service he traveled to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Then after receiving the Joint Service Commendation medal, Makani was honorably discharged in 2008. When not running Camp YOLO Makani own’s and runs his own business Keawe Adventures www.keaweadventures.com.  It is here where Makani finds true joy, educating others about Hawaii’s history, culture, and the ocean environment. With his extensive experience as a waterman and SUP paddler, Makani and Keawe Adventures  are the perfect combination to run Camp YOLOboard.
